2nd year Dance Performance

Unwritten Dance Performing Shifting Time

From reading the program notes beforehand my mind was open to the piece as I didn’t really get what the piece was about from reading the notes. This however changed at the end as I was questioning what it was about and as a group we were coming up with our own interpretations of what was going on.  One thing that stood out to me is the use of props especially the bouncy ball, I liked the use of the ball as to me as I connected it the program notes saying about ‘time became out playmates’. I made the connection as I believed that the ball was used in one way as ‘que’s’ for the dancers and in another way I saw the ball as a clock ticking showing the seconds therefore both showing timing as a playmate. I also like the use of the ball when I was watching the piece at one point, as I remember there being so much going on around me that I found it hard to concentrate as look at everyone and then suddenly my attention was drawn to the simple action of one dancer bouncing a ball.
In my opinion The name of the Company ‘Unwritten’ was shown in the piece as there were several moments where the dancers were talking however you couldn’t understand what they were saying implying that it should be ‘Unwritten’. There was also a section where a dancer was drawing/writing on the wall and again it was understandable, relating back to ‘Unwritten’. I thought this was very clever and exciting for me to watch because I was interoperating it in my own way and I find when I am able to interoperate things my mind become involved with the performance instead of just watching.
Overall I enjoyed this piece and I have learnt that it excites me to come out of a performance and not know totally what was going on so that I am asking myself the question ‘What was going on?’ and by asking that I have to try and think of an answer which is where my own interoperation comes in.

My thoughts on watching lessons 30/11/11

This is just entry to talk about the past few weeks, as I haven't been taking part in every class because of my injury I have felt like I have been on pause. One thing however I have found out is that watching each lesson is as important as taking part, looking back at my artist journal and the things I wrote I can see that I gained a lot out of each lesson. For example in the choreography session I noticed that the more people in the space the less I watched and took in however, the less people in space the more I watched and took in. This was surprising for me as I also noticed previous to this lesson when I am dancing the more the is going on around me the more I focus on myself however, when there is only a few people in the space I become more aware of others around me which I think is down to self-confidence. This to me was an interesting point as I hadn't really thought about how different my view could be from watching a few people to a lot of people and how it is different from when I am dancing to when I'm just watching.

Experimenting with the Elbow 18/11/11

This video is where i was working with my elbows to initiate the movements. This was just an experiment to see if i like working with the elbows, and i found that i created some good moves however, i kept repeating myself. In this short clip i was restricted to the floor as i had an injury to my foot.

Group Sculptures 17/11/11

These are some photos of a group of us experimenting with different sculptures, mostly using contact. This was great fun to do and we could carry on with our experiment by videoing us moving around getting into each sculpture.

Sculputures In Pairs 17/11/11

Abbie and I played around with making sculputures using contact, we wanted to use different level and different places of contact to add variety.

Pictures from my Artist Journal

This page out of my journal is from an Improvisation lesson where we communicated though touch, this lesson has stuck in my mind because I was surprised and learnt a lot from the lesson.
This is a picture of a page out of my Artist Journal, I choose this page as I remember this lesson well where I had to pick an instruction. I chose writing my name with my body intermittently, and I believe this page shows my thoughts well.

How can Blogging assist and support you as a dance student and artist?

As a Dance Student blogging can be an effective way to show and share your ideas to others, and it can also promote your work as a dance artist. As the teachers can see our work anytime with ease on our profile, it can be a way for them to help and guide us to producing our best work. We can also receive help from other students to create new work as I believe technology is a great way for us to learn and explore and by looking at others blogs it may inspire in many ways as everyone’s blogs will be different.
